RCMP received a report of possible distress smoke signals in a low area of the flathead where snowmobilers would not normally try to access. It was decided that when the call was first received on the 26th that due to the lack of information and no report of missing persons it was too high a risk to send volunteers that night and if the RCMP still wanted to investigate in the morning they should task Fernie Search and Rescue at the time.  RCMP did task Fernie Search and Rescue in the morning and we responded by sending a helicopter with two members to investigate and see if they could find the source of the smoke and whether anybody did require assistance; they did not find anything and returned to base.
