Search - Missing snowmobilers
Two snowmobilers did not return home at the end of the day but had made no indication they planned to spend the night out so friends were worried and called for help in searching for them. Cranbrook SAR took the call and called in Fernie SAR for mutual aid.
At first light Fernie SAR sent a helicopter with two Avalance technicians to evaluate the terrain in the area for avalanche risk and whilst in the process the SAR personnel on the helicopter spotted the missing subjects and landed. It transpired that the subjects had become disorietated to their location the previous day and as darkness set in and temperatures dropped to below -25C the subjects found an unlocked backcountry cabin and decided to spend the night in the cabin rather than become further lost and possibly run out of fuel.
The SAR personnel directed the subjects to a waiting SAR ground team on a nearby forestry service road.
