A 21 year old male sent a text message to his landlady advising that whilst hiking on Mount Proctor he had encountered a bear and two cubs who were preventing him from continuing on the trail so he had gone off the trail to try and get around the bear and had become disorientated and not sure where he was.  After consulting with a conservation officer it was determined it was now safe for Fernie SAR members to head to the reported area and search for the subject.

Ground teams on foot were taken to the trail head using ATVs and they then carried on to the last reported position of the subject on foot.  Whilst dispatching the final team the subject turned up at the SAR hall after managing to relocate the trail by himself and making his own way out.
